Applications for NASA’s fake Mars mission to last next year are open, which emulates the challenges facing the crew during future operations on the red planet. Ground-based mission, called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog), includes four volunteer crew members who live and work inside a separate 1,700-square-foot (158 square meters), 3D-printed residence space.
Located at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the Mars Dune Alpha accommodation covers an enclosure of about 1,200 square feet (111 square meters), used for fake spacewalk. NASA officials said in a statement, “As NASA is working to establish a long-term appearance on the moon through the Artemis campaign, providing important scientific data to validate the CHAPEA mission systems and develop solutions for future missions on the Red planet. statement The first CHAPEA Crew has completed more than half its year-long mission, which began on June 25, 2023 and is set to end on July 6, 2024.
Now, NASA is looking for applicants for its CHAPEA 2 mission, which is expected to begin in spring 2025. Applications are open to the public till April 2, 2024. In the Space Agency statement, officials said, NASA is looking for healthy, motivated American citizens or permanent residents who are not smokers, 30-55 years old and skilled in English for effective communication between crew peers and mission control. Applicants should have a sharp desire of unique, rewarding adventures and be interested in contributing to NASA’s work to prepare for the first human journey on Mars. ” During the year-long mission, four-person teams will perform ranging from robot operation to housing maintenance, crop development, simulated spacewalk and exercise
. Mars Dune Alpha accommodation is designed in a way how future missions on Mars could look like, including resource borders, tool failure, communication delays and other environmental stress. Walking through Mars Dune Alpha reveals the line of crew quarters in a hallway in front of the toilet and shower area. That hall turns into an area setup for small scale production at its end, which sits near an open kitchen and entertainment area with a table lounge furniture.
A door across the community location leads to a work area with shelves for a desk and devices. The rooms on both sides have fitness and laundry machinery, robotics control station and a 3D printer. In another door in the open working area there is a small medical bay, located in front of the primary airlock of the accommodation.
Applicants have professional experience in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field or Medicine as well as in STEM, Military Training or Testing Pilating. The full details of the application process and applicant’s requirements can be found online.
