Catalin Clarke broke the NCAA female basketball scoring record two weeks ago, but on Wednesday she became the all-time leading scorer among female college basketball players. Iowa Star crossed Lynette Woodard’s 3,649 career points with Kansas, erasing an important asterisk in the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.
She stayed behind Pete Maravich’s 3,667 points for the NCAA scoring record between men and women only 18 points. With an average of more than 30 points per game, Clark is in good speed to leave Maravich behind the No. 2 Ohio State in its next game, Iowa’s regular season final.
A few minutes before crossing Woodard, Clarke achieved another official NCAA record, which scored his 155th 3-pointer of the season and broke the single-season mark set before Idaho’s Taylor Pierce in 2019. This performance was part of Minnesota’s 108-60 Iowa Blowout for Clark with 33 points, 12 support and 10 rebounds, triple-double.
He entered the game with a need of 32 points to equate Woodard and scored almost half a points in four minutes. Woodard scored his points between 1977 and 1981, the time women’s college basketball was governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
The NCAA had not officially approved women’s college basketball until 1982 and does not accept any player or figure preceding that year. Clarke has finally dropped that discrepancy in the record book, much more to do in his Iowa career’s last few games (assuming she doesn’t reject WNBA for the 5th year).
The remaining season of Clark includes Hawkeyes games, Big Ten Tournaments and NCAA tournaments against Ohio State. Iowa is currently ranked third in Big Ten and is on track for double-by in the conference tournament, leaving around 10 games to play Clark.
